Welp. Looks like @AOC, @RashidaTlaib, @IlhanMN, and @AyannaPressley were right.

"ICE just quietly opened three new detention centers, after Congress told it not to. The facilities are all run by private prison companies"

All the lobbying and campaign donations has paid off huge for private prison companies. The GEO group alone made $2.3 BILLION in 2018, and they're all likely to make record profits this year.

Until Dems take control of the convo on immigration instead of letting the lies go unchallenged, public opinion won't be swayed enough to force real change. The demonization of immigrants has to be pushed back on, and a solution has to be pitched properly.

Hate progressives and stan for centrism as much as you want to, but if you're angrier at @AOC than you are at politicians on both sides using policy to personally profit from people's pain, I don't care much for your opinion. The war on the poor is real, it's time to pick a side.
Regardless of where you stand between liberal and progressive politics, it's a fact that not enough Dems are speaking with this level of urgency on the issues that matter. The politicians who have no interest in making real change deserve to be called out.
1/4 of Americans with diabetes are now risking their lives by rationing insulin. If you're angrier at the politicians calling it out than with the politicians accepting money to look the other way, you're part of the problem. Again, whose side are you on?

You can either protect the for-profit healthcare industry or you can protect your constituents, but you can't do both.
This is what happens in the absence of accountability.

This is why the media should scrutinize politicians' personal finances more: it usually has a direct effect on their policies.

Thread: Whether it's healthcare, climate change, or immigration, there's no reason why we should let bad faith actors w/ vested interests in the status quo keep defining what's moderate or radical, especially considering that the status quo is extremist levels of corporate greed.
I'm seeing much feigned concern over whether Dems are moving too far left, but no concern over how corporate interests are superseding public interests in increasingly violent ways.

Whoever controls the language controls the dialogue, and it's past time that we take both back...
It's time to stop referring to universal healthcare as socialist when America is the only country in the G7 without it. Universal healthcare is ideal, and Medicare4All is actually moderate. It's our for-profit system that kills and bankrupts ppl by the thousands that's extremist.

But crucially, Trump’s consistent racism gives confidence to others with racist attitudes & builds a terrifying atmosphere for targets of that racism. These are the real, painful, consequences when political or community leaders foster racism & play on xenophobic attitudes. (2/7)
People who are doing or saying racist things often feel like they speak on behalf of their community (ridiculous concept, I know). Therefore, it’s immensely powerful for a member of that same perceived community to say ‘not in my name’ in order to marginalise the racism. (3/7)

ICE is ALSO spending money that it hasn’t been given.

It is clear that ICE isn’t being held accountable; the agency must be abolished. We cannot be complicit in the militarization of our southern border.

People who come to our country in search of a better life should be treated with humanity and respect.
But right now people are being held in detention for profit, forced to live in unsanitary conditions, separated from their loved ones. This must end. ICE should be held accountable for its actions.
