Interesting piece by @_HelenDale. My three-tweet comment would be that analysing “liberal” side of current culture wars in terms of paganism understates the difference Christianity has made: many “liberals” are Christian or at least deeply in that tradition (Quakers)
but perhaps more significantly even those who are not are heavily influenced by concepts that would have been alien to pagan Romans: human equality and the dignity of the poor/excluded, most obviously.
“In Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek”: the Magnificat. Both profoundly revolutionary; underly much of our thought (especially liberal/left); and utterly un-Roman.
