@HughRBennett’s use of the phrase “pontificating about accuracy” speaks volumes about his attitude to truth.
Any responsible journalist with a regard for truth, having (no doubt inadvertently) tweeted a claim that was both wrong and important, tweet a correction rather than simply delete the original tweet.
Mere deletion does nothing to remove the falsehood from@the minds of those who got the original tweet.
Hugh has given no explanation for his refusal. The only conclusion is that he and the @GuidoFawkes website simply do not care about truth and accuracy.

This thread is on the convention that an outgoing government - one that has lost a vote of no confidence and is in office pending an imminent election - should not take any decision that preempts its successor: the “don’t preempt convention”.
What that means is rather important if Johnson loses a vote of no confidence in October. Unless another government is then put together within 14 days that does command confidence (the “national unity” idea) then there is an election and Johnson stays as PM until Election Day.
But Election Day wouldn’t then be till after Halloween: so if Johnson refused to ask for an extension, we’d crash out.

The convention is certainly that an outgoing government - in particular one that has just lost a vote of no confidence - should not take any decision that would preempt the result of the election to come.
So if Johnson loses a VONC in, say, early October, he should apply for an extension to A50 to avoid a crash out before the election.
But what if he refuses? Respect for constitutional convention is not, after all, a strong point of the Brexit extremists now in charge.

One excellent aspect of this thread is that it explains why the view that the WA is a “trap” is no more than the paranoid style of Brexit politics.
“The whole U.K.” was, of course, a U.K. Government demand: not entirely welcomed by the EU, to put it mildly. But the “trap” misreading of the WA depends on ignoring that basic fact. If it had been a cunning trap we wouldn’t have had to persuade the EU to build it.
The misreading matters because it then invites reading the WA through the lens of paranoia. And few legal agreements, let alone treaties, can stand up to a paranoid reading (a belief that the other side will do anything to get you).
