In our research, we've found that designers of dark patterns have three main motives: making apps more addictive, nudging you to buy more, and getting around privacy protections. In other words, they want three things from you: your time, your money, and your data.
We're all used to fighting addictive apps — auto-playing videos, notification bombardment — but some apps are more devious. Uber tempts drivers with an arbitrary daily "goal" when they try to quit. How many tired drivers has Uber nudged into an accident? nytimes.com/interactive/20…
