This is seeking to enforce the rule that asylum seekers should apply in the first safe country they reach. In this case, these asylum seekers would have to apply for asylum from Mexico.

Europe has a similar rule to avoid asylum abuse (Dublin Regulation).
The point of these rules is that asylum is not meant to be a workaround or shortcut for legitimate immigration process to country of choice. It’s meant to provide people protections from persecution in home countries.

That protection doesn’t just exist in U.S.
That’s exactly it. Really beyond dispute that the system is being massively abused right now. We need to restore requirements to protect legitimate asylum seekers who are being undermined by blatantly illegitimate claims from those who want to come here.
