Chatting to Brussels source this am; says the chatter there is around Johnson "obviating" the backstop with an unlimited extension to the transition period, until such time as tech solutions can be found for border. With "overhauled PD" backstop never needs to come into force...
Would involve "keyhole surgery" on WA. Would satisfy DUP that NI not being treated any differently from GB, potentially some Lab votes worried about cliffedge. But how can ERG sign up to a potentially indefinite closer relationship than backstop would entail?
So @BorisJohnson, you've said no backstoop. But do you rule out an extension to the transition period too?
