I hear a lot of people talking about the sustainability of meat consumption so thought I would share some of my thoughts (just to say I'm not an expert on the nutrition side of things but some of my colleagues from @Rothamsted @FarmPlatform might be able to fill in the gaps)
Firstly, gloabl meat consumption is huge (of course there are areas where meat consumption is low but on average we are overconsuming meat)
You need to feed the animals (generally with plants) and so why not just eat the plant instead of the meat? Also, meat production takes up more land and can release more greenhouse gases
However, we still need protein in our diet. Whilst we can get protein from plants they cant always provide us with all the amino acids we need.
Also, in many parts of the world it is not possible to grow crops well and so that land is much better utilised as pasture
I think reducing meat consumption globally will have environmental benefits but we certainly dont need to shift to a vegan diet at a global scale - in fact that could also have negative consequences...as with all of these issues it is a fine balnace!
There is a lot of great information and some nice charts to illustrate some of these issues in this article bit.ly/2IpDGfa from @WorldResources
