Update in litigation over the Trump admin's latest asylum rules: A judge in DC ruled the latest case is *not* related to previous litigation over the admin's asylum rules, so it's assigned to a different judge, Judge Christopher Cooper. In CA, the judge related the litigation
The DC lawsuit challenging the Trump admin's new asylum rules has been reassigned again, this time to Judge Timothy Kelly (no reason given for why it was reassigned from Cooper, which is pretty standard practice)
Another update: Arguments on the temporary restraining order motion filed in the CA asylum rules case have been set for July 24 at 9:30am PT — which means no ruling before then out of that case
Update: The judge in the DC litigation over the Trump admin's new asylum rules will hold args on the plaintiffs' TRO motion on Monday at 2pm. Govt's brief is due Saturday at 10am. Judge Kelly said he couldn't say at this point if he'll rule on Monday, but will aim to do so asap
The judge just held a brief hearing to hash out scheduling. The DOJ lawyer asked for args after a hearing in the CA case on Wed., but Kelly said that was too far out, noting they're dealing with a TRO (not a prelim injunc) and the case already has been pending for a few days
Big picture: We're expecting two rulings next week on motions for temporary restraining orders blocking the Trump admin from enforcing new asylum restrictions (see: buzzfeednews.com/article/hameda…) while the litigation unfolds. Who will rule first? What will each judge do? Stay tuned.
