The EU's biggest trick is that it has made something astonishingly sophisticated (EU membership) seem simple. The Single Market & Customs Union "just work". But under the bonnet are thousands of legal agreements, shared standards, communal databases, etc. etc.
But because it looks superficially simple, the Brexiters think "give me a napkin & half an hour, and I can whip up an alternative that does the job."
They see an abacus when in fact it's a supercomputer.
