I don't know what all this hate is about bringing a burner phone to Defcon is all about. I'm absolutely bringing one. For all the reasons below.
1. One year a speaker demonstrated a rogue AT&T cell tower on stage and asked people on AT&T to try to make a call and I did and my call got intercepted. I saw my phone number on the presenters screen!
2. There are giant rooms of people all with tons of antennas like this. They are actively trying to get into anything they can. Including your phone.
3. I love the wall of sheep, which is demonstrating how easy it is to sniff password. I like trying to get on it to see what apps and networks are insecure.
4. Wall of sheep one year demonstrated how plugging your phone into a usb power station can steal the data from your phone. I plugged my burner in to learn more. I wants hands on experience with all of this!
5. That awkward moment someone wants to connect with you on Signal but you don't want to give them your actual phone number.
6. Any village/workshop/contest that needs me to do something experimental like take a photo of a QR code or record a sound for playback, it's ok, I'm ready, I'm sandboxed basically. I have a digital playground in my pocket.
7. Let's not even go into me being a journalist protecting sources. But let's talk about when I worked in a NOC for an MSSP. My phone had work emails/phone numbers/client contacts. It would be a major problem and how embarrassing for me as a security engineer to get hacked.
8. This one year I got a burner and a scammer kept texting me, I had such a blast trying to scam them back. Told them I'm a stranded and need money fast. It was hilarious.
9. I mean WiFi pineapples are sold like crazy there. My phone connects to many hidden ssids. What if I forget to turn off wifi, or something else.
10. What if I get drunk and lose my expensive phone?
11. What if I don't want to answer any calls for the weekend from clients or bosses?
12. What if I just want to feel cool with a new tech dingy and "going dark"? Is that really bad of me?
