Okay, instead of shittalking yet ANOTHER cis/het white dude fantasy writer being a total fail, let's talk about fantasy authors who aren't male that you should be reading.

(If you know my tastes, this thread will be 0% surprising to you.)
Of course, if you aren't reading NK Jemisin (any of her series, they're all amazing) you're missing out on some of the best contemporary fantasy.
I've only read the first (so far), but Kameron Hurley's Mirror Empire books are like no other fantasy being written now. Like everything else she writes, so brutal.

(Note: Hurley is probably my favorite writer.)
Ann Leckie's latest "The Raven Tower" is beautifully written and contains one of my all-time favorite tropes: Gods directly fucking with people. Oh and? Protag is a trans man.
Speaking of gods fucking with people: Bujold's Chalion trilogy are also amazingly readable and full of court intrigue. Yes, please and thank you!
Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows duology is based around a fantastic heist! Very dark, kind of queer, very good. Don't let the YA designation deter you- they are some of the most enjoyable fantasy books for older teens or adults
Speaking of YA: Archivist Wasp by Nicole Kornher-Stace is a mind bending mashup of post-apocalyptic, fantasy, and necropolis settings.
If you're looking for more of a classic hero's journey type fantasy, Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy will be right up your alley. A bastard! Who is an assassin! Who as a boy gets thrown into training without really wanting to! It hits all the notes with panache.
"The Priory of the Orange Tree" by Samantha Shannon is full of dragons and I loved it.
Naomi Novik's "Spinning Silver" does a wonderful job of taking common fairy tale tropes and turning them into a beautifully told story.
The Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman posits a world in which all realities are connected by a central library, that keeps everything in balance. Books about books! I love.
Do you want urban fantasy? Because Jade City by Fonda Lee is whew. Family, organized crime, drugs, magic. Yes yes yes yes.

Also: Jade War is out... soon? By the end of the month, iirc.

1. Before I go & enjoy the beautiful Seattle sun, a short & entirely inessential thread on #Pride2019 -- about one aspect of all this that I haven't seen commented upon much. Not the most important aspect, but an aspect.
2. So, I'm a normie cis hetero white dude -- the hegemon, the Standard Model, the American for whom all of pop culture was made for decades upon decades. With very few exceptions, culture has been made to flatter my tastes, preferences, & self-conception.
3. Insofar as Others appeared in pop culture - women, minorities, queers, what have you - their stories were inevitably told *in relation* to me. How the free-spirited woman taught me spontaneity, the wise old black man taught me life lessons, my Gay Friend made me tolerant, etc.

Just wrapped up two weeks of contextual inquiry, so I thought I’d share a few suggestions on conducting contextual inquiry/ethnographies/fieldwork:

IMO, the best resource on fieldwork is @sladner. If you want to know *how & why* to do fieldwork, read ‘Practical Ethnography’! I just want to share some tactical tips for researchers so the work goes smoothly.

-This is long, but it’s not exhaustive. Lemme know what I missed.
-I have blind spots. As a cis-het white guy born & raised in the US, I have more blind spots than most. If you see my blind spots, plz let me know so I don’t repeat the same mistake.

Ok, since I'm taking a break from cleaning my house in anticipation of my girlfriend returning from England, I'm going to address a lot of the arguments I get from people when I tell you that the only way to prevent climate collapse is disruptive, probably violent revolution.
I'm not going to be nice about it, because I'm furious at the rest of you for being so stupid. My conclusions are pretty obvious, and if you can't follow them, it's not because I'm a genius. (I mean, maybe I am, but still.)

If you think that SJWs are ruining superhero comics, I want to catch you up on a few details. (Fair warning: This is a long thread.)
First, please understand that publishers care about growth much more than conscience. They're not trying to effect social change; they're trying to adjust to a changing market.
Superhero comics have not seen the growth one might expect from the increased popularity of superheroes in other media, while the book market for comics has grown rapidly and attracts a more diverse audience than the direct market (through comic stores).
