As usual, this week I've read a ton of articles about women's rights and #feminism (especially in Africa) this week. Let me share 5 pieces that stood out for me.
In the seven years I lived in #Senegal I often wondered, where are the queer women? I figured they were being silenced, but this intriguing piece by @africasacountry suggests that queer women's silence may be a strategic choice.

One of the major breakdowns in communication between #Muslim #feminists and critics thereof is the implicit misconception that the latter have not or do not face issues around women's rights. This is largely due to yet another misconception: 1/6
the inaccurate claim that critics of feminism do not believe there is a need to fight for women's rights.

Having said it innumerable times, it remains a point that falls on deaf ears: to be critical of feminism is neither a lack of empathy, nor a dismissal of 2/6
the plight of women within the ummah. Across the global Muslim community, there are female critics of feminism who suffer injustices and who fight for their rights in ways that align with Islam. 3/6

Ronald Reagan signed the Mexico City Policy in 1984. This sweeping mandate against reproductive freedom around the globe denied,

“US federal funds to any organisation involved in providing abortion services overseas or counselling women about them.”
Though revoked by every Democrat and reinstated by every Republican
since, Trump has taken up the cause with renewed vigor.

Every time the global gag has been reimposed by a Republican president, rates of back street and self-administered abortions have increased.

Spain will hold its next general election on April 28th, its third since December 2015. This follows the rejection of the PSOE government’s 2019 budget at the hands of Catalan nationalist parties in mid-Feb. 2
The campaign will run from April 12th-26th. Polls will be blacked out for the five days prior to the vote, beginning on April 23rd. Expect plenty of thinly disguised polling data on the “Andorran fruit market” or some such to circulate online, though. 3

Back by popular demand: a very short case study. In book 9, after the gang have blinded the Cyclops Polyphemus and snuck out, clinging to the bellies of the shepherd's rams, Odysseus and crew are rowing away at top speed. But O. can't resist taunting his blind victim.
The men try to restrain him: they say, σχέτλιε, τίπτ’ ἐθέλεις έρεθιζέμεν ἄγριον ἄνδρα; (9. 494). Notice here that the Cyclops is explicitly defined as a human being, a man: aner/ andra, same word used of Odysseus himself in line 1 of the poem.
Polyphemos is defined as a country-dwelling or wild man (agrios/agrion -- someone who lives in the country as opposed to the town, with connotations of roughness or fierceness). But he is definitely human, according to the Greek text. "Am I not a man...?"
