THREAD. Actually, i’ve spent my life avoiding heat. Here are my top tips for staying #Cool in a #HeatWave...
1. Buy an air conditioner. They sell out like summer was never on the calendar but @ecoairGB and @DeLonghiUK are good. Spend as much as you can afford and 8000/9000BTU is fine to cool small / medium room. (seal around vent pipe as well as u can. Only need 1 cool room to survive)
2. CLOSE THE BLOODY WINDOWS! Most important thing. Curtains and blinds too. On my street today all windows are wide open and the air outside is 12 degrees hotter than inside! #Madness! Close at 10am and open as soon as the air outside cools below inside, usually after dark
3. If you’re very hot or trying to sleep run a t shirt under tepid water, wring dry and put on or lay on your shoulders / front in bed. The effect is amazing and got me through 40degree heat in Brisbane on one of the worst nights of my life #Heatwave
4. If you have to leave the house walk in shade, carry 1 litre (minimum) of water with you, slow down and take breaks in air conditioned shops. Ice lollies, strawberry’s all that kind of thing. Try not to drink booze
5. Create your own air con by having a cool (not cold) bath and drip drying next to a fan. Essentially creating the cooling effect of sweat and wind #Heatwave
6. #Great #Tip here from @wrong_un_ those ice packs for bad backs / muscles work great too. Don’t over fill!
7. A belter from @neilgibbons. Works best if the fan is actually secured pointing out of the window. Doing this with an industrial fan in Edinburgh 2013 saved my audience from melting
8. Try to avoid creating extra heat in the house. Avoid using ovens, grills, even a desktop PC or Mac, big power adaptors and chargers create heat. Microwaves, cold food and takeaway are your friend! #Heatwave
9. Super important. If you have elderly neighbours or friends. Or know people who struggle with mobility, or are ill, check on them to make sure they’ve got everything and are well prepared. Even closing windows or blinds they can’t reach will make a difference #HeatWave
YES YES YES! If you can’t find shade even placing something on the seat and wheel stop it getting too hot. And CLOSE THE WINDOWS IF YOU HAVE AIR CON!
