Watching The Pelican Brief and it's a bit eerie how the president is played like a combo of George HW Bush and Lyndon Johnson (esp re dog) but his backstory is more Trump like...
Amazing how Darby can get her hand on a pretty great wig, albeit a slightly longer redder version of her wig in Pretty Woman, while on the lam for 10 hrs.
It's somewhat amazing there's never been (known?) assassination attempt on a Supreme Court Justice, or even a high appeals court judge?
I always thought it was just studio racism that kept Julia and Denzel from exchanging even a small kiss in this movie but according to some TMZ-like articles sourced back to a book, it was Denzel who didn't want to betray his African American female fans?
Amazing how many John Grisham movie adaptations have a) essentially the same score b) chase/near assassination scenes in weird Metropolitan tourist destinations.
Anyway—not there yet!—it's soupy ending but probably a better movie for not falling into that rom/thriller trope.
Like, for one thing, it would be unethical for Grantham to sleep with a seriously vulnerable source.
This movie gets pretty meta journalistically, when Darby tells the "Washington Herald" reporter that she put two-and-two together when she recalled a @frontlinepbs on the case.

Cut to villain watching Frontline and saying "Fuck PBS."
@frontlinepbs "The Pelican becomes the hero" man that tape of Darby talking to Grantham is overwritten and does a lot of plot work.

It's like the voice over in Blade Runner. Better off without it.
Is that...is that George Plimpton doing the Frontline narration that is usually Will Lyman's job?
Denzel makes his editor meet him at Mount Vernon to discuss the story. (which 😹)

Editor: "I thought about dropping you"—seemingly the star reporter at the paper—"into the ranks of the unemployed, but then I knew you'd file a discrimination suit" 😐
I love when thrillers set in DC take totally nonsensical routes. The classic of this is No Way Out, but this comes close.
Riggs Bank! 🍺
Find somebody who looks at you like Darby Shaw looks at Gray Grantham when he calls badies seeking comment.
So much extra fabric in the early 90s.

Also, they should have lopped off the last 5-10 min of this movie.
