Army on the street of East London because G4S decided it wasn’t financially viable to fulfil their contract. Two years of austerity and riots the year before 2012 which were triggered in part by the shooting by police of an unarmed Black man. Yes halcyon days for the country.
What has the Olympic legacy been for East London? They gave away Olympic stadium for peanuts to West Ham FC. Promised new leisure centres in Newham were delayed as council payers had to foot the bill for servicing a stadium that Londoners had no access to do.
Housing which was supposed to be affordable got drastically reduced so that only people who could afford it were investors out of the reach of locals. There became an inner and outer Stratford with the inner with shiny new places becoming defacto gated area for those with means.
But I’m glad David Schneider and his celebrity centrists chums found 2012 Olympics so unifying. Even when many (not David) were asking for the army to be sent in because the riots of 2011 was such an inconvenience.
Seven years on, this is the legacy of Olympics. No amount of myth making by centrists will change the facts on the ground. It failed in its sporting, housing and social cohesion. Only thing it succeeded in was accelerating gentrification.
But we got behind a guy called (Mo)hammed Farrah from Somalia and it felt like UK was at ease with all of its constituent parts. What they forget, hostile environment was already being rolled out. Never hear peep out of them about Yarls Wood or pantomime levels of Islamophobia.
Honestly this all feels like gaslighting by supposed centrists to me. It’s not like they’ve not been told enough about their myth making around 2012 Olympics. George Osborne got booed in the stadium. Local people said they felt scared by army with missiles on top of their estates
