To my mind Cow protection argument gets weaker if you dont support Ahimsa more generally

Cow protection is no doubt important to Hindus over the ages
But in the times we live in, the argument gets weaker when you say - Hey...am OK with slaughtering animals generally speaking. But not OK with cow slaughter
