Hope everyone enjoyed the Marianne Willamson show, because the hard Left will now destroy her for upstaging their favored candidates and turning the debate into a circus, and Party power brokers don't want her getting anywhere near Biden onstage.
The tiny band of "moderates" is also not long for the stage, because the kook base of the Democrat Part would rebel if the nominee was someone who publicly accused the Liz Warren types of peddling "fairy tales." The moderates intolerably embarrassed the Party last night.
The only real contest is between Biden and the hard-left types, and it still doesn't look like much of a contest. Most of what you're watching in these debates is a pageant to catch Biden's eye for a veep nod.
Biden is still very, very capable of losing this primary, but none of the others are really capable of winning it. Polling suggests no one who excites the far Left has been able to convince the bulk of primary voters they are electable.
The likely outcome will be Biden tapping a hard-lefty as running mate to lock up the fringe and signal that his heart is really with them, even as he pretends to be a moderate to fool general-election voters, as per standard Democrat election protocol.
The relatively moderate candidates on stage last night did not understand the game. They were wasting their time warning the lefties to avoid kooky positions that alienate Dem centrists and general-election voters.
The game right now is to push that socialist garbage hard, so the lefties stay on board when Biden plods into the nomination and taps an extremist as his running mate, winking to the far Left that he "gets them" and shares their concerns.
Dem Party high command will probably want to ditch the really far-out lefty candidates and go with someone like Kamala as the "unity" veep pick for Biden. Imagine the gushing media headlines that would generate!
But those plans are all contingent on Biden bumbling all the way to the finish line and accepting the laurels Party chiefs want to bestow upon him. He was bad enough in the first debate to inspire serious doubts behind the scenes. If he's that bad again, all bets might be off.
Now, if you're one of the candidates stuck in the first debate, you can't do much about Biden because he wasn't there. The folks actually sharing the stage with him will have a clean shot at his kneecaps.
Which leaves them with a tough choice: do they go after Biden with everything they've got, possibly pushing him closer to self-destruction, but also wrecking their chances of becoming his unity veep pick if he doesn't implode?
Or do they reinforce the idea that the first debate was an irrelevant freak show, remodel themselves as moderates, burnish their "electability," and position themselves as either respectable Biden alternatives or solid choices to be his running mate?
The big takeaway from Space Cadet Williamson getting all the attention last night is that NONE of the people on stage with her was REMOTELY electable. None of them is even slightly likable, and that's a death sentence in modern politics, especially in a race against Donald Trump.
Media has assured the DNC they can sell Biden as lovable old Uncle Joe, the endearingly eccentric political veteran with a finger on the pulse of blue-collar America. They've been saving him from creepy behavior and idiotic statements for decades. They think they can do it again.
If Biden is so bad that those promises become implausible, the scenario where an "exciting" lefty moves a bit closer to the center, repackaged as a plausible alternative who isn't an old white guy becomes more viable. That's the strategic challenge for the others tonight.
But if Biden does well enough to keep the Party in line, and the polls keep showing voters don't think any of the others can win, his veep slot becomes the prize for the rest of the primary. It will be interesting to see which path the others onstage with him choose. /end
