You all remember when Ronald Reagan launched his presidential campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where the three civil rights workers, Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner, were murdered and proclaimed, "I believe in states' rights." What do you think that meant?
Or when he talked about food stamps and spoke about a "young buck" buying a t-bone steak, a term used by certain White people in the South to denote a Black man and part of the racist mythology used to justify lynching.
I am glad these tapes came out to remind people of this history, which got blurred in the last two years. To have Delaney cite Reagan in the debate last night should be a reality check. Warren & Sanders are not far left candidates. The party has just shifted so far to the right.
