THREAD: CST and @Signify have today released the report ‘Engines of Hate: the online networks behind the Labour party’s antisemitism crisis’ #EngineOfHate buff.ly/2YrtAVt /1
The problem of antisemitism in the Labour Party over the past four years has been fuelled by a flow of antisemitic tweets and posts on social media /2
This report found there is no separation online between generic pro-Labour Twitter accounts and campaigns, and abusive Twitter accounts that claim to act in support of Labour to close down online allegations of antisemitism /3
The report identifies 36 Twitter accounts, each with their own, overlapping, online networks driving social media conversations about antisemitism and Labour /4
The top account is revealed to be @SocialistVoice, Scott Nelson, who has tweeted antisemitic tropes and has allegedly been removed from the party /5
All 36 Engine Room accounts have at some point, tweeted content claiming antisemitism allegations against Labour are exaggerated, weaponised, invented or blown out of proportion, or are part of a smear campaign. 12 of the 36 accounts have themselves tweeted antisemitic content /6
Engine Room accounts are involved in, or connected to, Twitter networks that use hashtags like #BoycottRachelRiley or #ResignTomWatson to attack people who criticise Labour’s handling of antisemitism. These same accounts also drive generic Labour hashtags e.g. #GTTO #JC9 /7
Many tweets about Labour’s antisemitism crisis use hateful language to attack Jewish Labour MPs or other people who raise concerns about antisemitism /8
The data included in the report shows that Corbyn’s time as Labour leader has seen national online coverage and engagement across all media, mentioning Labour, antisemitism and surrounding issues reach an unprecedented level /9
The 36 Engine Room accounts prefer alt-left & anti-Zionist websites to mainstream media: 6 of the top 10 articles shared by the accounts came from Electronic Intifada & 4 were written by Asa Winstanley who joined Labour in 2016 but was reported to have been suspended /10
The Twitter output of the 36 Engine Room accounts have a disproportionate focus on antisemitism, Jews, Zionism and Israel – 7 times higher than official mainstream Labour-related accounts. /11 #EngineOfHate
Articles claiming Corbyn is victim of a smear over antisemitism are more popular than other kinds of smear narratives, bar those linked to his attitude to Russia. Pieces blaming UK Jewish groups for the alleged smear are twice as popular as those blaming Israel-linked groups /12
