Perhaps less short than I intended. In my defense, a lot of it really was waiting for paint to dry. My last few days have been quotes about deliberate cruelty from adults. Today's follows the same theme, but the narrator is 7. Before we go on, think of a 7 year old you know.
Got one? Take a few deep breaths, because you're about to be mad as hell. This one takes a few tweets to get even the shortened relevant quote. It's shortened for 7 year old narrating lack of brevity and word economy :)
Day 18: “Yesterday after lunch the nurse brought a lice comb and hairbrush. A while later the guard came back and asked for (them)”
“We did not know where they were. We looked at each other to see who had the combs”
“He said that we had ten minutes to look for the combs and that if we could not find them, we were going to be without beds and without covers. He gave us ten minutes. All of us were panicked looking for the combs”
“He came back and yelled at us, asking if we had found the combs. We had to tell him that we couldn’t find them. When we told him, officers came into the room and started taking everything away. They took pillows and blankets."
"We had a blanket that we were using to hold up in front of the bathroom because there is not a door. The officer took even that one."
"He said that we were going to sleep on the floor. He said it was punishment for losing the combs. What he said was true. We all slept in the hard tile floor last night.”

-G, 7 years old, from El Salvador.
I am shaking just typing it again. These guards have so fully dehumanized the children in their care that it seems worthwhile to let them sleep on the cold floor over two missing brushes. The cruelty IS the point.
Lack of funding didn't make those children sleep without bedding. The guards chose that. They didn't even have a way to cover themselves when they went to the bathroom. The smallest shred of remaining dignity taken away over two missing brushes.
I have no words. Just speechless rage. How fucking dare they do this in OUR name. I need your help. I need you to call and keep calling. I need you to draw with me, share, post this on those assholes' pages. They get no peace until these kids get peace.
I love you all. Be good to one another and keep watch. Stay safe. The racism has teeth, these days.
