The vote of college students doubled from 2014 to 2018, so now Republicans are closing polling places on college campuses, enacting new residency requirements & not allowing students IDs. Despicable nytimes.com/2019/10/24/us/…
60,000 Florida students voted on college campuses in 2018 after federal judge overturned ban on early voting sites at state universities. So this year GOP legislature said all early voting sites must have “sufficient non-permitted parking” which most campuses don't. So absurd
The most egregious example of student voter suppression is still Texas, where you can vote with a gun permit but not a student ID

1) Ten years ago today, I wrote a blog post distinguishing checking (a prescribed, mechanistic, confirmatory activity) from testing (oriented towards exploration, discovery, investigation, and learning). developsense.com/blog/2009/08/t… It takes time for ideas to develop. /
2) One problem was expressing a distinction as “vs.”, which many took to mean “in opposition to” (Real Madrid vs. Manchester United) rather than “as distinct from” (trees vs. forest; biting vs. eating). Checking is not *opposite to* testing; it’s *inside* testing. /
3) A few years later, @jamesmarcusbach and I got much closer to what we were trying to say. satisfice.com/blog/archives/… Checking is a part of testing that can be done entirely algorithmically, by a machine. But that part needs human risk analysis, design, programming, and evaluation.

#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

There are many iconic monuments to greatness to see along the National Mall in DC, but there are also many reminders of the ramifications of allowing hate to lead, of leaders subjugating groups of people — many of the monuments exhibit both. Let’s take a walk...
It stunned me when I learned as a teen that we, too, in America sent people to camps. They were called internment camps, and 10s of 1,000s of people of Japanese ancestry, including many American citizens, were summarily sent to camps across the West during WWII.
At this memorial, you see the words of late Sen. Daniel Inouye -- a storied US WWII hero.

His family wasn't interned, but many comrades' families were -- as they fought for country.

Imagine that reality: you fight (and die) for the country, while your family is held in pens.

This thread captures history from various perspectives all blended together to reveal a fuller picture.

It shows that Saro-Wiwa was also human like any of us but he was exceptionally courageous and dogged in spite of his human flaws.
Saro-Wiwa was a diminutive man who invariably always smoked a pipe and was considered quite brilliant.

He wrote a popular play which was adapted for TV when we were younger “Basi and Company”.

He was from Ogoni - an oil-producing area in Rivers State which has several villages.
