Exactly. We got out of the 1920s once before.

We are now approaching the same dangerous levels of income inequality we had in the 1920s.

FDR taught us how to turn that around. It didn't actually take him long.
2/ The Depression may have helped him win the 1932 election, but Roosevelt was able to make rapid changes because he had so much popular support--and because the Dems won both the House and Senate.

3/ He did it without the support of the wealthy class, who remained Republican opponents of his New Deal.

He won in 1932 with 57% of the popular vote. If a Democrat does that in 2020, things can happen fast.

Hi, Tate.

I’d like to talk about two parts of your tweet: “enforce our laws,” and “safety of all Americans.”

Let’s start with “safety” part.

The 600+ arrested in Mississippi were taken from their place of employment . . .
1/ . . . where they were apparently working peacefully. 20 were juveniles, including a 14 year old.

Why do you think the companies hired them? And kept them working? Not because they pose a danger to Americans.

These working people are not a threat to the safety of Americans:
2/ You might not like them or want them, but they are not a risk to anyone's safety.

On the other hand, people like this, including the guy who walked into that Missouri Walmart heavily armed, are a danger all Americans (not just Americans with dark skin):

Me, neither.

In fact, he's a life-long Republican who did some soul-searching. I'm sure you know his resume, so I won't go on about his conservative credentials.

If you don't have time to read his book. . .
@MaxBoot 1/ . . . I can offer a few highlights.

Boot painstakingly traced how the GOP morphed from a conservative to an authoritarian party.

He explains that by 1964, the GOP entirely ceased being the Party of Lincoln and became the Party of Southern Whites.
@MaxBoot 2/ “With the clarity of hindsight” he saw that “whatever GOP candidates claimed to stand for” GOP voters understood that the GOP candidates were promising to keep minorities in their place and maintain power for white men.

This was a painful realization for him.

What they have in common: They see themselves as victims.

E.W. Jackson believes it’s the demonization of white people by liberals, not white supremacy, that is radicalizing mass shooters.
2/ It’s definitely counterintuitive that members of the Fox-Trump-GOP view themselves as victims—but they do.

Prof. @jasonintrator explains: The dominant group feels victimized by encroaching equality because the dominant group believes that nature forms a hierarchy.
@jasonintrator 3/ Thus when “inferior” groups seek equality, the dominant group thinks the inferior group want to displace them at the top. What’s actually happening, of course, is that the oppressed groups want equality.

A short thread on HotStuff vs Tendermint for Libra

1/ LibraBFT uses HotStuff as the base for their consensus. I went through the paper today, and it appears to be practically unaltered version of the latest HotStuff that was accepted to PODC'19

2/ HotStuff is a consensus in the same family as Tendermint and PBFT. It improves on Tendermint in two aspects:

1. It is chained, meaning that k view changes take k+2 rounds of communication, instead of 2k
2. It is responsive (see below)
3/ Responsiveness means that once the network is synchronous, the protocol finishes in time that depends on the network latency, not on timeouts in the protocol. It is not the case in Tendermint, in which one always waits for the precommit timeout before moving to next view.

Charlatans like Abramson on some level know that they’ve been peddling a fraud, so instead of defending their debunked arguments on the merits, they resort to bogus appeals to credentialism: a fallacy Seth should’ve learned about in law school
The only reason Abramson garnered a platform was because he pioneered a groundbreaking form of “experimental journalism” which entailed hawking bias-affirming theories to Bernie Sanders supporters about how he was #actually leading Hillary Clinton in the delegate count
Abramson in May 2016: "I’ve been a metamodernist creative writer for many years now, but had not seen an opportunity to bring this earnest, optimistic, and loving art practice into my professional writing activities until Bernie Sanders came along."

1. I am told I should welcome the efforts of @betterbrexit. I'm not impressed. It's too little, far too late and ill thought out. EEA might well be a large part of the solution but it is not a miracle solution and moving into it from the position of being an EU member is not easy
2. To maintain frictionless trade we would need a customs protocol to go with it along with a series of negotiated annexes which may take a number of years to complete. It's not as simple as just filling in an Efta application form.
3. EEA has often been described as an off the shelf solution (even by me) but it is only off the shelf insofar as it is an existing framework. It still needs to be beaten into shape and will have to take into account the concerns and red lines of Efta members.

By now, most Americans know this tax bill is terrible. We know it's unfair, it's a giveaway to the rich, it cuts health care & puts other services at risk.

What hasn’t sunk in yet is how it could also harm the economy, costing jobs and prosperity.

I count at least 5 ways. 1/
First and most directly, by cutting taxes on the super-rich and asking everyone else to pick up the tab, this bill will exacerbate our already sky-high levels of income inequality, as @DLeonhardt correctly points out. 2/

Beyond being morally repugnant, increasing our income inequality will also cause the economy to grow more slowly and will result in more fragile growth, bringing recessions on more rapidly. 3/ imf.org/external/pubs/…
