Liberalism isn’t going to go away without a concerted effort to replace it. Even if there’s a global financial crisis or a world war, liberalism will come back, like a monster at the end of a horror movie.
What would a concerted effort to replace liberalism look like? For starters, you need to develop an alternative worldview that replaces ALL five layers of the liberal ‘onion’ and you need to develop it to the point that it can be used to run a country.
Next, you’ll need at least several hundred highly capable followers and you’ll need support from one or more existing elite factions. The latter will probably require waiting for the right crisis/opportunity. Then you’ll need to take power through whatever method is appropriate.
Anyway, few people even really think about this stuff at the right level, let alone try to act on it. There are no signs of a serious, concerted effort to replace liberalism even in so-called ‘illiberal’ states with tremendous resources at their disposal.
You get ‘regression to liberalism’ in states that attempt to find an alternative path because nobody attacks the core (the liberal view of mind and science). It’s too attractive to nationalists/traditionalists who want an easy way to reconcile tradition with science/technology.
