We do not know and cannot know that a vile comment generated for mass media will result in physical harm to other women. This is a popular assumption. It is an unpopular fact that the state enacts violence on people every day.

This is not an argument for speech full of hatred. It is a observation that speech has become an overwhelming obsession for Western progressives, a group who seem to have forgotten the pain of the world beyond conversation

It is as though there were a meeting in the 1989s to which progressives from good homes in the West were invited and all present voted to give up on protesting against disposession, militarisation, wealth accumulation etc and focus on compassionate language instead

Again. This is not to dismiss the world of representation at all. It's just another hopeless plea to Western progressives to be more ambitious. Setting the style guide for public language seems a bit meek.

To take politics into a primary or single realm is disastrous. And progressives have been disastrous in their attempts to improve the world through better language these past decades. It's gone to the shitter.

For the nth time: language is not nothing. It interweaves with the weapons of a state. But the weapons themselves are invisible to a bunch of progressives who attend compassionate arts events.

To believe so utterly that compassionate language can change the world is to miss the fact that compassionate language serves to conceal the bloodiest crimes. See, for E.g., Kevin Rudd's apology to the stolen generations. It occurred simultaneous to the horror of the intervention

It was almost forgotten until @drcbond's perfectly composed response to a racist "debate" in Melbourne that Soutphommasane, known for his gentle language, had supported the devastation of the intervention

Obama's deportation of millions from the US was excused by progressives due to the man's use of language that was compassionate and correct.
His use of the term "undocumented" concealed his efficient use of ICE and abuse of millions

And Macron, a brutal leader of a racist state, is forgiven his physical attacks on the Algerian comrades of the Black Vests because he wears a nice suit and married an older woman.

That Clinton, a truly hawkish woman whose particular brand of leadership has occurred at the expense of everyday lives for decades, is somehow seen by progressives as palatable is testimony to the enchantment with language

And your softly spoken Penny Wong is widely known to oppose the will within the ALP to recognise Palestine.

There's no need at all for Western progressives to disdain the hope for better representation. There is an urgent need to see beyond this tiny scope. Language is as much an obfuscation as it can be a tool for liberation

Finally, pls consider that the approved language of compassionate progressives can and does act as a class filter.
