EU diplomat on Boris letter to Tusk.

"3 years on & still this letter fails to put forward any realistic alternatives for the backstop. Hope and imagination don’t keep the border away. This letter is not request to renegotiate, it’s a clear cut attempt to avoid it all cost.

I can reveal that this cookbook, which sadly does not involve Jean-Claude Juncker's favourite Luxembourgish delicacy, cost 3,300 euros and it has been downloaded 647 times.
That's 5 euro cost to the EU taxpayer per download!

UK budget share in 2018 was 11.88 % meaning UK paid 60 cents per download! or about 388 euros.

Which is now worth more or less 388 POUNDS.

The commission says that the cookbook is "full of tasty European and African dishes features some of the great recipes and cultural heritage of our two continents, including the British delight Beef Wellington"

Earlier today, I asked the European Commission why it was refusing to renegotiate the Withdrawal Agreement, given there is a new government and the alternative seems to be a no deal Brexit.

Short thread in response to proposals put forward by @FaullJonathan et al. as an alternative to the #backstop.

They claim to offer a compromise that both UK & EU can accept.

It's a sophisticated proposition but is it a runner?

First, worth noting (and it's a pity this is so) they downplay the complexity of the NI/IRL challenge + exaggerate the scope of the #backstop.

For instance, the @BelfastAgmt meant much more than "the elimination of a physical [Irish] border".

& It isn't true NI wd be in a different regulatory regime to GB (ie EU's).
#Backstop wd mean NI alignment in v.specific areas.

Nor that the UK would be in the EU's Customs Union.
It would be in the customs territory of the EU.

PM Johnson has made the removal of the #backstop the make-or-break matter when it comes to an exit deal with the EU.

The #backstop is there specifically to meet the UK’s commitments to avoid a hard Irish border & protect the 1998 Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement & peace process.

This isn’t just of benefit or interest to the island of Ireland.
A broken Northern Ireland means a limping UK.

How does the #backstop work?
A v.brief explanation:

Having to apply & enforce customs procedures & rules around market access makes a border ‘hard’.
(just talking trade here)

Put simply, the greater the hassle in getting goods across a border, the harder that border is.

A small number of commentators such as Eoghan Harris are advocating dropping the #backstop. There is absolutely no logic to this - indeed it would be an incredibly stupid strategy. It's simple to see why.
If @BorisJohnson and the Brexiteers aimed for a trade agreement that would keep the @BorderIrish open then they would have no problem signing up to the backstop which would never be required.
The fact that they don't want the backstop shows that they aim for an agreement that would require a so called hard border. This was always what they wanted as they want to do trade deals with other countries.

Fun #Boris fact. About 13 years ago, when I was news ed at @ResFortnight, we sent a reporter along to interview the then shadow higher education minister about universities and science policy. It was a total farce. He neither knew nor cared one jot....
@ResFortnight At one point, he blustered (approximately), "Well you clearly know more about this than I do, Why don't you tell me what our policies should be."
@ResFortnight Universities and research, I've always believed, are incredibly important-economically and socially. I was naive enough at the time to be shocked at such blatant disregard of the issues that I still regard as central to Britain's future.
