The New York Times has a great graphic that shows how divergent the NRA and Democrats in Congress have become.

In 2008: 67 'A' ratings from the NRA on the Dem side

By 2018: Just three.

But one term missing from this analysis is 'Sandy Hook.'

You see a big drop 2012-2014. That's in large part due to the shootings in Connecticut and the unsuccessful gun reform legislation that came after.

It was a generational change in the way the NRA acted and was perceived
After Sandy Hook, the NRA doubled down on the conservative culture war and its embrace of the GOP.

That's advantageous when the GOP controls the agenda. But where the NRA had once been able to marshal bipartisan effort, it no longer has that sway
