Jacob Rees Mogg hails a constitutional monarchy 24 hours after compelling the Queen to do something which has politicised her to a greater extent than anything else in her reign.
Rees Mogg defends what he’s done by saying the Queen has no choice but to accept. Indeed that is absolutely correct, she has no freedom of action. It’s why she relies on politicians not to place her into political situations.
What I find fascinating is there is no doubt that if a politician of another party did this Mr Rees Mogg (as a previously avowed constitutionalist) would have denounced it. So my question is does he know that or do he (and others) actually believe what they’re saying?

Grant Shapps on Today: “Boris Johnson has made more progress in a few weeks” than has taken place for years.

Just a reminder that *no* actual changes have occurred. The EU has said they will listen to UK ideas if they’re compatible with the WA. That’s it. They haven’t moved.
When challenged the minister referred to “mood music”. This is meagre stuff.

Why spin that great progress is being made is useful to govt:

1) to deter Tory rebels from legislating next week on no deal.
2) when they bring back similar deal in Oct to make it look/feel different
The EU’s position has been to say if you can come up with better ideas than the backstop then we’ll have them instead of the backstop.

That is- quite literally-what the EU’s position on the backstop has *always* been.

The anti no dealers saying this is a constitutional crisis is getting a little tedious. It isn’t yet. If they all decided they wanted to prioritise their opposition to no deal above all else they would just pull a traditional constitutional lever and change the government.
They won’t do it because they prioritise other political objectives more. Like the government, their problem lies with trying to find unusual parliamentary methods to achieve their ends.
It’s not a constitutional crisis when you simply choose not to avail yourself of the constitutional remedy to solve it because it doesn’t suit you.

Boris Johnson, 6th July: “there is a big, big opportunity to bring this country together.”

28th August: Parliament is prorogued.
Of course if the referendum isn’t enacted, we’ll see the same. This country is in trouble.

In order to create a new settlement something has to confer legitimacy. The current process, certainly after today, is not. Almost certainly that legitimacy has to come from the voters.
The remainers are right that there is no maj in Parliament for a no deal Brexit or as far as we know a deal. The Brexiters are right that a remainer legislature can’t keep trying to govern as the executive. In every way, this parliament does not work. MPs should face up to that.

2. First, some background. From 1899 to 1901, roughly 48,000 people died in British concentration camps in South Africa. Of the 28,000 white deaths, 22,000 were children under 16. Over 4,000 were women. The 20,000 Black deaths were less clearly recorded, but c.80% were children.
3. The camps killed about 10% of the total white population & perhaps a quarter of Boer women and children. Most died of diseases like typhoid, their resistance weakened by malnutrition. This is Lizze Van Zyl, whose food rations were cut to put pressure on her father to surrender
