In response to our latest article, we have been asked by a former patient of Dr. Curtis Crane to share this video, which chronicles a series of complications experienced after a phalloplasty procedure.

"I feel like there's a lot of silencing in regards to these complications...maybe on the [trans] community side, they're so protective of these surgeons....like these surgeons are gods....they're helping us and we have to kind of take whatever we can get."
"My entire goal with this is not to tell people whether they should or should not have phalloplasty. What I want is for people to have true, true--and I mean true informed consent."
"There's many other people w/ similar--worse--experiences w/these surgeries. I don't want my story to be used asked anybody....but, hey, these are facts. And if anyone wants to come after me, go right ahead, because I have full documentation and I'm not afraid."
"I'm going to post pictures in here. They're not pretty pictures. I want to show the reality of it....I'm sharing my story so that if there are people who are really considering getting this surgery, to go into it with the mindset that anything can happen."
"We shouldn't be guinea pigs. People shouldn't be guinea pigs. There needs to be proper aftercare. More professionalism. More informed consent. More disclosure. More dialogue so that people are kind of prepared."
In the video, the ex-patient mentions fistulas as a known (and common) complication. That, as well as the more severe complications, need to be talked about more so that adult FTMs can assess risk. This article confirms fistulas occur in 10-64% of cases.
