@TSubtext yes, that line is a good representation of views on the difference between tribal citizenship v. race. We foreground citizenship & kin. Native people code racially in many ways. In my family we have people who are ID'd & self ID as Native, white, and Black. We are all DAKOTA.
@TSubtext there is debate on the intersections of race & Indigeneity for sure. some people will not like me saying that i have a family member who IDs as white and is also Dakota. But she knows she moves through the world with white privilege. Native people who do, need to not deny that.
@TSubtext so to answer your question more directly, the DNA test painted us as a race of "Native Americans." Cherokee & other Native critics of that move object to her racializing being Cherokee when citizenship & kinship are the definition of belonging they and other tribes foreground.
