I have some interesting and hopefully useful insight for the improvement-focused #ITSM community, coming from the Accelerate State of #DevOps 2019 report which you can download from here: cloud.google.com/devops/state-o…. Starting from the top (a thread with 11 pointers):
(1) Availability is seen as an important aspect of operational performance. SLAs, among other items, remain a useful tool to define and track availability targets. Google's #SRE practices are a useful resource to check out for cloud-based availability practices.
(2) A clear change management process, along with automation, monitoring, and a healthy culture, is one of the foundational capabilities for improving technology delivery and, as an outcome, value delivery.
(3) Continuity management, including disaster recovery testing at regular intervals, is an important contributor to higher levels of service availability.
(4) It is useful to introduce change management practices that make use of multiple change authorities.
(5) Automating the checks on some of the changes is another significant contributor to improvement.
(6) Recording all changes with relevant metadata is useful, and sometimes a requirement, especially for regulated environments.
(7) The CAB should (and can) *not* be used to review and approve all changes: its role is to help with e.g. coordinating between teams and process improvement. The CAB can also help in a strategic capacity where trade-offs are discussed or higher level sign-offs are required.
(8) Having a clear and communicated change management process is an important contributor to improved performance.
(9) Knowledge bases for internal use can be helpful, as they support knowledge capture and additional information sharing. Often-criticised ticketing systems can also contribute here.
(10) Cloud computing matters. A lot.
(11) Very importantly, good technical practices and improved, clear processes (for e.g. change management) contribute to employees' well-being and reduce (the risk of) burnout.
