Do not use Bill Gates as a motivation for becoming a university dropout. Gates was an exceptional case. He dropped out because he was extraordinary. He did not drop out because he was a struggling undergrad student.
In 1978 at age 23, Gates wrote a paper and published it the next year in Discrete Mathematics. Today, that paper has been cited 350 times because it contained novel information on what is known as ‘pancake sorting.’
The professor from UC Berkeley who co-authored Gate’s paper described him as the smartest person he (the professor) had ever met.
Before you dropout, ask yourself if you have co-authored (or are in the process of co-authoring) an important scientific paper. Also ask yourself if you are the smartest person a prominent professor (and global scientific player) had ever met.
In essence, what Gates did was that he dropped out because he demonstrated that he did not need to remain in school to be successful after school.
Today, some of the top doctoral students in the world’s greatest institutions only strive to publish their work in reputable journals as the one Gates published in—so that they can justify the award of a doctorate.
So, because Gates does not hold official university degrees is not a suggestion that his academic achievements do not measure up to a degree.
