It's Buddy Holly's birthday. Here he is with Waylon Jennings (and offscreen middle-finger guy) in a photo booth in Grand Central Station a month before the plane went down. 1959. Thread to follow:
A couple of my faves: "Midnight Shift." I find "Annie" to be a damn aspirational figure. She works hard, plays hard. #goals.
The "Holly Hop" rocks.
I love "Think It Over." If you "think over" the lyrics, you want to say "Buddy, she's just not that into you." Great lyrics!
"Down the Line" is flat-out HOT. That opening guitar. swooooooon.
I cannot imagine what it must have felt like to be 14, 15 years old and hear THIS coming out of the radio. I would have writhed with adolescent desire. It STILL jumps out of the speakers.
I like Buddy Holly best when he's ... vaguely pissed. Or maybe not so vaguely.
Last month, I went to the Play It Loud exhibit at the Met, and "oohed" and "ahhed" over Buddy Holly's Gibson, with the tooled leather cover - Holly probably made it himself. It's a beauty. #BuddyHolly
And let's hear it for the Crickets, too. What a phenomenal band.
