A new paper shows that cells supporting 1 million mile vehicles are now possible. This has implications for heavy trucks, vehicle to grid and CO2 emissions.

Basically it shows we are learning how to improve batteries. And the learning is picking up speed.

There's still much we can learn about SEI layer formation, eliminating cobalt, solid state electrolyte, lithium sulfur, the impact of additives, temperature management, etc.
This means that within a few years we will have cars and heavy trucks that can run 1 million miles before you have to recycle/2nd-life the battery. It also means the extra cycles required for V2G (vehicle-to-grid) become unproblematic so you can aid the grid and solar+wind.
This also means we have to rethink how long cars last.

We used to scrap cars when they where to rusted but new cars hardly rust anymore.

For combustion vehicles it's the drivetrain that requires more and more maintenance untill scrapping becomes cheaper than maintaining.
But with BEVs the drivetrain is simple and can probably be designed to last 1 million miles. And now it seems the batteries will match that longevity.

That's ~5x longer lasting.

It means 5x less use of resources.
And it's not just the future. As I've detailed before, partly based on the work of prof. Jeff Dahn's group (check it out if you are a battery nerd!) the data supports Musk's claim last week that (new, actively cooled) batteries can easily last 1500 cycles.

For a 45 kWh battery that's ~250k km. This is worst case and for a bigger battery it's more.

This means most current studies are flawed because they use outdated data and assume replacement after 150k km.

You can find my debunks of some studies here: innovationorigins.com/author/auke-ho…
To conclude: this story is another datapoint showing batteries are rapidly advancing and are not only becoming cheaper and lighter but also longer lasting. Mark my words: you ain't seen nothing yet!
