(And the other point being that this was especially true in battleground states)

In past decades, (white) Evangelical Christians have embraced the political right, both in& out of church. This has alienated congregants of all stripes, but the problems run deeper than you might think. My new piece follows in thread form. Read it here: economist.com/united-states/…
1. It's well-known that white evangelical Christians lean heavily to the right. Their embrace of Trump has caused this fact to go mainstream. But the interesting bits are (a) how we got here and (b) the consequences moving forward.
2. Evangelical leaders abandoned discussions of morality & Biblical honesty in the 80s and embraced the politics of individual rights — to life, to speech, etc. In the past decade, those leaders have combined with conservative legal networks, forming a new Christian legal Right.

Could be big? This poll finds Dems beat Trump 48-37 in a head-to-head 2020. But w/ an Indie candidate, the race is within the margin of error, w/ Trump barely ahead. Word of caution w/ polling unnamed candidates, but shows similar spoiler effect that we saw in NH poll last week.

What's really interesting is that Democrats and Republicans are roughly as loyal to Trump/the Dem choice even when an Indie runs, but independent voters flock to the third party choice. Indies are 46-20 D in the two-way, 27-18 D and 37 Ind in the three-way.

Media selectively posting edited clips and engaging in manipulative practices like disrespecting guests they don’t like and talking over them is just one reason why many people have lost faith in the “news” industry and why so many reporters have lost jobs in recent months.
2. In 2019-2020 we’ll see more news media layoffs; but that will be preceded by more outlets and more reporters engaging in desperate practices to boost ratings + social media shares, including posting selectively edited video clips or sound bites and omitting crucial context.
3. Howard Schultz has called for higher taxes on the “wealthy” and rate cuts for the “middle class” and “small businesses” but what rankles journalists (most reporters are aligned with one of the two major political parities) is his refrain that “our two-party system is broken”.

(Short thread.) Just had a very rare look at the Susie Green Twitter feed. First interesting thing I saw was this RT of a Mermaids slide from the recent LGBT conference. (1)
Knowing that Mermaids' training sessions have what you'd call a "reputation", I thought I'd do a quick fact check on the slide to see if it's up to their usual standards of accuracy. So I looked up the paper referenced, and here it is :- (2)

It took me all of five seconds to spot the big inaccuracy on Mermaids' slide. They claim the risk factors listed relate to LGBT youth. But the paper itself is very clear that it's only looking at LGB youth. (3)

1. Donald Trump won the GOP primary and the presidency because campaigning on whiteness-first messaging still has potency in the 21st century. Plenty of people don’t want to directly engage with this fact, but this thread will be getting into it in full.
2. All too often I see the framing that “Hillary lost to the worst candidate in history.” But I think this framing has always been wrong, and it allows people to bypass a question that they don’t want to grapple with: why was Trump electorally viable to the degree that he was?
3. Do not construe this as me arguing that Hillary’s campaign didn’t make mistakes, but I want to laser focus on why people voted for Trump, and what that says about where we are as a country.
