many ML approaches to estimating structure from either single image frames or from image and lidar, almost none from semi-dense or sparse direct structure estimates
this is curious because with those approaches you have the additional prior that all input points lie on sufficiently textured regional
direct photometric approaches are still relatively uncommon in 3D vision i guess. classical feature based methods are often more robust out of the box in a wider variety of settings and generally easier to realize and tune
