A very strong companion article to the pretty good Vox primer. and re the "Death of Democracy" article that was flying around, I like how this points out that it's not liberalism/democracy and ... undetermined factors. There is an opposition, with agency, working against it.
There's this vibe of "Sad, how democracy just seems to fall apart eventually." Yeah, because sometimes it takes the eye off the ball of its active opponents, authoritarians and plutocrats. Those people have agency and bear responsibility.
That's my problem with some conservatives who hold individuals to very high standards of moral behavior or culpability, but bad action once an individual is part of a corporation or authority structure is treated like ... the weather. Can't be helped. Just part of the world.
"Caveat precariat" is bullshit, to steal the excellent "precariat" neologism I first read in Guy Standing's work.
