Dear Fellow White Women,

You have got to stop telling Black women to be quiet. It's not cool, Don't be uncool.

Don't ask for "civility." Racism is not civil. Sexism in not civil. Misogynoir is not civil.

Profanity and insult are shrewd attacks on privilege and patriarchy.

According to "The Status of Women of Color in the U.S. Media", women of color represent just 7.95 percent of U.S. print newsroom staff, 12.6 percent of local TV news staff, and 6.2 percent of local radio staff. There are fewer than there used to be.

In a world organized around the comfort and status of white men, women of color struggle for a voice. One way to be heard when the world is set up to silence you is to be profane. Would people know who Stella Nyanzi is without her profanity?

There is power in refusing to be civil. Poverty is not civil. Reproductive injustice is not civil. Over-incarceration is not civil. Rape is not civil. Voter Suppression is not civil.

Civility can go fuck itself.
