An important story about the federal government muzzling scientific research and renewable energy.

A thread.
I wrote a book about a group of energy developers trying to build giant extension cords (technically, HVDC). It would lower power prices and add *a lot* of new renewables to the grid w/o undermining reliability.

There was a lot of interesting research the buttressed the story I told in the book.

It came from NREL, NOAA, @DrChrisClack and others. It was vetted, peer reviewed, etc.

My book came out and then something weird happened...

@DrChrisClack @NOAA @NatureClimate And then @pfairley wrote about how political appointees *blocked* publication of a @NREL study about how improving the power grid would allow more renewables.

More foundational work that pointed towards a different energy future – a future of 50%+ renewables.

Federal scientists do important work. Their work is highlighted in a new book on energy. And then the work begins is either scrubbed from government websites or isn’t published.

Just finished @NathanielRich article #LosingEarth in the @NYTmag. It's incredibly well written & researched. If it's pubbed as a chapbook, I'd buy it for my library, but ... 1/
... it left me frustrated because it falls into a major fallacy of climate reporting. It is not enough to report on the climate (melting ice shelves) and the global meetings and the political intrigues… 2/
… there’s the energy dimension as well. We emits millions of tons of carbon not out of ignorance, or some unintended oversight, we burn the carbon specifically to power our modern way of living. 3/

@ITIFdc @beisgovuk @ScotGovEnergy @EnergySysCat @theCCCuk UK just makes top 10, performing best on 'social legitimation' (i.e. making clean energy more acceptable).

Does well too on 'option generation' (i.e. scale & diversity of clean energy RD&D funding).

Poorest on 'scale-up' (i.e. later stage demonstration & commercialisation).
@ITIFdc @beisgovuk @ScotGovEnergy @EnergySysCat @theCCCuk UK has done extremely well on growing its RD&D spend, ranking 1st of all the @MICleanEnergyRD countries. Kudos to @beisgovuk and its Industrial Strategy spending, which I imagine has been the primary driver.

OFGEM - the UK Government's energy regulator - are the biggest obstacle to making full use of #Scotland's #renewable #energy resources.

Energy policy is reserved to the UK Government, so there's absolutely nothing the Scottish Government can do about #Ofgem.

Here's a BBC article where Ofgem have supposedly given the "green light" for the first ever grid connection to Shetland.

(Believe it or not, we're in 2019 and the UK has never bothered to connect #Shetland to the National Grid.)

Unfortunately, approval for the grid connection to Shetland is conditional on the UK Government funding a wind farm project there, which will in turn be conditional on being able to transmit power to the National Grid.

#Thread: Inspired by the CBP Facebook revelations, I decided to take a look at the OUN-B affiliated U.S. Organization for Defense of Four Freedoms of Ukraine (ODFFU) Facebook group, which includes 610 people. In no particular order, here are some profiles that stuck out to me:
Dmytro Zhmailo, spokesman/executive director of Free People, member of Youth Nationalist Congress (MNK), and senior staff for Ukrainian MP Oleh Medunytsia, who himself chaired MNK 2002-2006. Among others, Zhmailo is FB friends with CUN leader S.Bratsiun.
Pavlo Podobied, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance's Department for the Preservation of Places of Memory, according to Newsweek, has "accused Jews of being the main perpetrators of Soviet crimes against Ukrainians in the 1920s and 1930s." (1/2)

Hi guys! @AtteHarjanne and me just published a paper "Abandoning the concept of #renewable #energy" at Energy Policy. In it, we argue that the concept of #renewableenergy (RE) is outdated. 1/

What we argue here is that using what is basically a 1970s-era definition of renewable energy, and conflating "renewable" with "sustainable" or even "clean," is becoming more a hindrance than a help in meeting the main challenge of the early 2000s - #climatechange . 2/
We argue that the concept of RE was largely set in stone well before the magnitude of #climate challenge, and actual problems with some sources that are technically renewable, was understood. This has resulted to, e.g., using the "renewable" label to cover all bioenergy. 3/
