my pet theory is that much bad internet writing is due to a social and material failure/refusal to recognize the blog post as a proper literary genre, with the result that good bloggers are writing bad essays and good essayists are writing bad blogs with none of them the wiser
"material" in the sense that bloggers should be getting paid well directly for the good blog work they do instead of, in the best of cases, being made to write invariably mediocre essay collections bc that's where the money (comparatively) is
also you don't have to be a tyrant about boundaries in order to acknowledge that two different genres exist, it's not about pigeonholing writers as exclusively one thing or another, it's just important to know there are multiple, mutually-non-implied aesthetic possibilities
i guess one point here is that the internet actually DOESN'T flatten standards per se, it instead rapidly multiplies the number of overlapping but distinct sets of standards faster than they can be conceptualized (e.g., "a take")
