After reflecting on Trudeau’s #brownface (and now #blackface) scandal, a THREAD:

TL;DR: Racism is systemic. Policies matter. Commit to anti-racism. Amplify racialized voices. Scrutinize for consistency.

Race is complex. Its discourse must meet that complexity, not overlook it.
First, be *aware*. Stop being surprised by events like this. It’s not “shocking” that Trudeau wore blackface; It’s expected. Racism is systemic in Canada. Those who deny it aren’t seeing a different society, they’re simply failing to name it.
Second, be *precise*. Specifically, ask the right questions: Not “is Trudeau racist?” But “how do his actions reflect systemic racism?” And “what are we doing to dismantle that system?” The individualization of racism is what upholds its systemic force.
Third, be *measured*. Trudeau’s actions are harmful. But policy matters more. It’s #elxn43. Politicians’ actions speak to their character and perspective, but don’t let that proxy overwhelm more impactful electoral criteria.
Fourth, be *productive*. After the upset has been released (and catharsis matters), how can it be channeled? What can be learned in this particularly racial moment in Canada? What are we doing to combat white supremacy? And, more importantly, what are we doing to uphold it?
Fifth, where appropriate, be *deferential*. Everyone can discuss these issues, and should. But news media needs better representation. And dominant groups need to be mindful of how their privilege and experience colours their perspective on the gravity of racial transgressions.
Sixth, be *consistent*. Love free speech until an opponent offends? Demand others resign when you won’t apologize? Hate “identity politics” until your identity is implicated? Don’t pretend to love our faces, when you hate our bodies, minds, and culture. Policy over posturing.
Seventh, be *realistic*. If we unearthed the skeletons from every candidate’s closet—especially those who support regressive social policy—it may be even uglier. Trudeau’s actions matter. But don’t pretend everyone else has an unblemished history. Weigh this scandal accordingly.
