People who want to work for themselves often start with a product/service idea, and then try to turn it into a business.

But there's also another way. You can define the type of business you want first, and then try to find an idea that fits into that.

I did the latter.
Because why do you even want to work for yourself?

For me, it was about trying to design my lifestyle to better match my preferences. To be in charge of my time & what I do. To work on my own terms & not have to ask for permission. To do work that intrinsically motivates me.
My only constants are the above. Any idea that satisfies those requirements becomes a candidate. And it can even be multiple ideas, tried either simultaneously or serially. I'm not wedded to any particular idea as long as its conducive to a lifestyle that I find satisfying.
Here are the ideas I selected for myself, for now at least:

1⃣ SaaS for Userbase / encrypted.dev

2⃣ Publish 2-3 ebooks / digital products

3⃣ Build and run a few commercial web apps on Userbase

4⃣ Build web apps for others based on Userbase
Right now I can afford to focus on 1⃣, but I'm tempted to try 2⃣ soon. 3⃣ and 4⃣ depend on 1⃣, so they have to wait. As circumstances change and as I acquire new information, these ideas might change a lot. I might just do 1⃣, or I might add a 5⃣ and a 6⃣ in there too, etc.
