IMPEACHMENT COUNT: Our latest list has 147 Democrats in support of launching proceedings but at least 5 more are likely to be there by Thursday, given statements today:

-DeLauro (D-CT)
-Larson (D-CT)
-Phillips (D-MN)
-Gonzalez (D-TX)
-Lynch (D-MA)

There are many more likely to be out by then too -- Thursday is shaping up as a breaking point for much of the caucus. These five are just the early indicators.

Interestingly, the also endorse "inherent contempt" -- the process by which Congress can fine and even jail witnesses who refuse to cooperate.

-18 of the 44 Democrats considered vulnerable frontliners now favor impeachment proceedings

-26 are not for it yet, but still a lot in motion this week.

A lot of smart people wrote "impeachment is doomed" stories in June/July.

It looked unlikely at times, but there was always the wildcard that new allegations -- or Trump exacerbating old ones -- would surface.

And the judge also argues that the DOJ memos describing the horrors of a presidential indictment were conjured out of thin air rather than out of legitimate factual concerns.

@aedwardslevy @SpeakerPelosi @RepJerryNadler NOTHING Democrats do will sway Republicans to support impeaching Trump. They will stand by him no matter what he does.

So when #Nadler and #Pelosi pretend that "gathering evidence" is a good-faith path to building support for #impeachment, they are trying to deceive you.

Continued dithering by Dem leaders on impeaching Trump has had an extremely damaging effect on the power of #impeachment to protect the rule of law.

They thought it would strengthen their hand to appear reluctant, but waffling has had the opposite effect.
I hate to say this, but I increasingly believe that #impeachment will be far less effective now than it would have been out of the gate in January.

Mealy-mouthed Dem excuses for inaction have telegraphed to the public that impeachment is entirely a partisan political calculus.
Just to be clear: I believe more strongly than ever that Dems should #impeach NOW. And it isn't about Mueller. Incitement of violence against the press is enough. What this thread is saying is that #impeachment will have less teeth than it would have a few months ago.

There's no denying that #impeachment talk has accelerated over the past few months. But I'm not convinced that this past week was really such a Rubicon when considered in broader perspective, or that a handful of well-argued essays in liberal magazines are the drivers of change.
For starters, there's been no shortage of impeachment talk in mainstream publications since Trump took office. I've gathered quite a few such articles in this @ShallTakeCare database, which includes analyses tracing back to before Trump even took office. takecareblog.com/blog/impeachin…
