Speculation: Donald Trump wants impeachment proceedings (and perhaps has even been intentionally provoking them) because he mistakenly thinks it will help his reelection bid when he's acquitted in the Senate.
Additional speculation: Many Dems in DC know (or suspect) that this is Trump's strategy, and because they fear that Trump is magic, they fear that he's right that this will serve his electoral interests.
If that phone call is what the reporting suggests it is, and given the enormous extent and depth of corruption that has marked this administration, it's hard to see how the Republican Party emerges stronger after impeachment proceedings, acquittal or not.
IMO, the Democratic message for 2020 is anti-corruption and pro-democracy...so let's hear the GOP Senators and Congressmen aggressively defend blatant corruption, voter suppression, and non-stop obstruction of justice. Let's see what voters think of that.
Of course his base of 25-30% of the population will be fired up to support him even more. But they were never going to leave him anyway. If the Democrats want to prosecute the case for democracy and against GOP corruption, what better way to do it than in impeachment hearings?
