In September 2007, most polls and commentators had Rudy Giuliani as the frontrunner in the GOP Presidential primary. Let that sink in. Imagine the Rudy we know now as President. washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
The irony is that it was largely the evangelical right (now firmly behind Trump) that submarined Rudy's campaign because he was pro-choice.

And for comparison sake (and to state the obvious)...Sep 2007 is to Nov 2008 as Sept 2019 is to Nov 2020.
To put this another way, the GOP'ers in 2007 who really dug Rudy weren't even the GOP'ers who currently most love Trump. I dunno....starting to think the problem with the GOP might be a bit deeper than Trump.

I'm working on a book about nostalgia in 19th C American culture, so I couldn't help but notice Trump's invocation of the "good old days" here. Trump always associates the "old days" w/ violence used w/ impunity by the powerful to discipline unruly others. latimes.com/politics/story…
Like here, where he fantasizes about executing the person who blew the whistle on his abuse of power.
Or during the campaign when he talked about how protestors would be handled differently back in the "good old days," when America was presumably great.

The President and his supporters think that American Democrats are enemies of the American people, and thus it is ok for the President to ask the Justice Department to work with a foreign government to dig up dirt on them. That's what is going on here. Authoritarianism 101.
They think that the President's actions are in pursuit of a "higher law" and are necessary because he is trying to protect the sovereignty of the US against what they perceive to be an existential threat. They think losing to Democrats is an existential threat to the US.
The President and his supporters also think that journalists who inquire into his actions to hold him accountable to the public are "enemies of the people." Again, this is authoritarianism 101.

Just woke up and read the whistleblower's report, whispering "holy sh*t" multiple times. It brought back memories of a morning in September 1998 when I retrieved the newspaper from the front stoop, made a cup of coffee, and sat down to read the Starr Report.
If the Starr Report was 98% soap opera, murmured "holy sh*ts" elicited by salacious details of the Clinton/Lewinsky relationship, the whistleblower report is about a sustained effort by the President and his staff to distort the upcoming election and cover up those efforts up.
And now I'm watching one Republican on the Intelligence Committeee after another pretend like the rank criminality that's been alleged is actually no big deal, just a witch hunt. Either Trump's got dangerous oppo on all of them, or they've entirely lost their ethical compass.
