Barclay to meet Barnier. Doubt he has the cojones for a press conference due to lack of progress, personality and courage.

Recently Brexit Sec has taken to being smuggled in the back of the commission to avoid reporters outside.

Why? There's nowt to say & fear of humiliation while facing Barnier in front of UK and EU press.

Expect an anodyne pooled TV clip w/ same old soundbites.

Pathetic really. Shades of May.

Symptomatic of UK gov continuing inability to be straight w/public on Brexit.
It leaves field clear for EC to win the spin game - which gets transmitted back via correspondents to the very EU27 capitals UK is trying to influence.

EU diplomatic sources are adamant there will be no negotiations on the Brexit deal at the Oct 17 EU summit.

It's a blow to Boris Johnson who seems to pin his hopes on a last minute, late night capitulation/compromise to get a breakthrough.

But can the PM, after meeting Varadkar, Merkel, Macron, really not know or believe that the EU27 won't negotiate at leader level at the Oct European Council?

Or does he calculate on (another) humiliation in Europe?

If sent packing a la Salzburg or Luxembourg, he can return to London and bash Brussels.

I've tried to be reasonable, he will say, but you can't reason with these crafty continentals.

And you traitors in Parliament are now forcing me to ask for an extension!

Shanker Singham, of Alternative Arrangements Commission, says group accepts need for level playing guarantees in withdrawal agreement and FTA with EU.

Promises to hew close to EU standards on tax, state aid, environment etc needed to get tariff free FTA on, eg, scottish lamb..

Singham describes such provisions as entirely normal in FTA.

He is right but point is such LPF guarantees likely to make UK US trade deal more difficult or limited.

Also limits freedom to diverge on EU regulation, which is one of the points of Brexit and ways to make it pay 2
Anyway interesting that the weight and proximity of EU market carries more heft with alternative arrangements commission than hope of a US hail mary pass trade deal.

@10DowningStreet asked repeatedly to have the press interview inside and was refused, so he was expected to be heckled.

Thread: There’s an insidious argument that it is automatically “un-conservative” to oppose anything that has been baked into the British political landscape for more than a couple of decades. Hence Brexit is supposedly a sign of the Tories being irresponsibly revolutionary. /1
Now, I’m the last one to disagree with the notion that this government has been (and continues to be) cavalier and irresponsible in flirting with a disruptive No Deal Brexit, which was certainly not the Brexit which I and many others campaigned and voted for. /2
But the lazy idea being bandied around by journalists, commentators and others (@sullydish has a slightly more measured take) is that Brexit is inherently un-conservative. Which sounds pleasing until you actually stop and properly think about it. /3

Is @MichelBarnier feeling nervous that the European Commission and Task Force 50 are at risk of being isolated by @theresa_may #Brexit diplomacy?

He's published an OpEd in 20 papers. Mostly boilerplate, but some lines to read between. 1/

@MichelBarnier @theresa_may First the isolation point. Doth M. Barnier protest too much? What need this OpEd now? The mandate is the mandate, after all, so why the need to restate these positions while everyone is on holiday?

There are voices around - and not just British voice - who question whether Barnier is being that 'helpful'.

Not everyone agrees with this very strong Commission assessment of role of services in goods, and the marginal advantage Chequers would bring. /3
