In LA at dinner. Friend: “my dude hit me abt a Kamala Harris fundraiser.” Blk Woman at the table (in her 30’s): “who is Kamala Harris?” I respond, “she’s your senator. She’s running for President.” We show her pic. She responds: “there’s a Blk woman running for president?”
At same dinner comprised of all Black ppl who work in entertainment, where no one knew ANY of the candidates running. Guy: “but what did Obama actually do for us while he was in office? Nothing.” Another guy: “y’all really think voting is going to change the projects? Nah!” Me:
Should our Democracy fall...I’ll reflect on moments like these. I tried to converse w/out judgement. I tried to convince w/compassion. But I failed on both fronts. I’m frustrated w/the apathy. It must have been so hard for Harriet to convince her brethren to flee the plantation.
