In trying to understand why the GOP acts as it does, most historians would suggest that it's generally best to apply Yoakam's Razor.
I mean...an LA millionaire in a cowboy hat singing these words is only a few steps removed from an NYC billionaire "man of the people" complaining about the removal of confederate statues, no? 
It's worth noting that Yoakam grew up in that most Southern of places....Columbus, Ohio.
Regardless of Yoakam's intentions when he wrote that song in the 80s, I think there's little doubt how most of the 7 million people who've viewed that video would interpret the song.
