Looking forward to todays #MentalHealthCrisisSummit with @keepnhspublic @nhscampaigns in London. I'll be speaking this afternoon on health of health service professionals in a session that will be focused on the mental health of workers @UniteinHealth @unitetheunion @Unite_MHNA
This mornings #MentalHealthCrisisSummit is chaired by @SoniaAdesara. She promises this won’t be a talking shop but will come up with campaign aims that we can all sign up to.
.@IanBFAWU, president of @bfawu1 talks about the workers his union represents, some of the most insecure in the UK. Highlights the work they’ve done in supporting fast food workers. #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
We’re hearing from @IanBFAWU about how zero hours contracts puts people under lots of pressure which has a negative effect on their health. @FT reported on some early research backing this up in Jan19: ft.com/content/d8d82e… #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
Now Rachel Bannister from Mental Health - Time For Action (mentalhealthtimeforaction.org). She talks about her families experiences of being failed; she naively thought that secondary care services they were thrown into would be well staffed & well resourced #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
As Rachel talks abt her families distress caused by lack of support for her daughter made me think again of Hunt’s tweet . Families cried out for support for their children but @Conservatives health secretaries have failed to act #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
Denise McKenna @MHResist speaks #MentalHealthCrisisSummit. She has strong critique of current mental health services & anti stigma campaigns. Highlights stigmatising of people on benefits & people with mental health conditions being isolated by austerity #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
Denise talks about the political struggle: Equality for all, in all aspects of our lives (mentalhealthresistance.org) #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
Now Elizabeth Cotton (@SurvivingWk) talks about the ‘UBERisation’ of mental health jobs. ‘If you aren’t navigating the system yourself you don’t know how bad it is’ #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
Last speaker this morning is @KenLoachSixteen. ‘We need to get someone into government who will carry this work out and carry it through’. #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
.@KenLoachSixteen 17,000 have died whilst waiting for disability benefit to be awarded. Highlights case of Michael O’Sullivan theguardian.com/politics/2015/… #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
.@KenLoachSixteen highlights case of Jerome Rogers theguardian.com/money/2018/may…. I heard Jerome’s mum speak @mmhpi #DebtThreats campaign in December
We’re now seeing a trailer for new film #UnderTheKnife after an intro from the director. There’s going to be free screenings across England in October. More here: undertheknifefilm.co.uk #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
Thanks to @keepnhspublic & @nhscampaigns for the invitation to speak at today’s #MentalHealthCrisisSummit alongside @minifeet2, @TUCLaurieHeseld & @mattdykes. We’re now talking about the health of workers @unitetheunion @theRCN @The_TUC
Now listening to @minifeet2 talk about compassion fatigue in nursing. ‘Over 300 nurses in England & Wales took their own lives between 2011 and 2017’ #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
I mentioned resilience in my session. You can read the article I referenced from #MHNjournal ⬇️👀📱 #MentalHealthCrisisSummit @Unite_MHNA
.@TUCLaurieHeseld 'We really do have a mental health crisis which is worsening' Highlights education sector has the worse problems followed by health & social care. Also highlights problems in construction sector inc. Hinkley Point #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
We're hearing @TUCLaurieHeseld about some of the biggest factos: Too high workload, feeling of control, status, a voice, how change is managed... We're in a situation where all are at risk but those in precarious employment at much greater risk #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
.@tuclaurieheseld highlights @The_TUC campaign, Great Jobs For All. More about this here: tuc.org.uk/national/lets-…. #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
Workshops done. We’re now back in the main room at #MentalHealthCrisisSummit. Just this afternoon plenary speakers and feedback from the workshops to go! Hope my contributions earlier were of use. Cathy Augustine @keepnhspublic is chairing.
Now @cyclingkev @NEUnion talks at #MentalHealthCrisisSummit. Just going to pick a couple of statics: Child unhappiness we were 14/15 in advanced economies (2015). Child happiness lowest it’s been in 25yrs and child unhappiness highest in schools.
.@cyclingkev quotes @YoungMindsUK survey. Main cause exam pressure. References @_NatashaDevon raising concerns about the pressures young people face. Schools shouldn’t be contributing in this way to the stress that children have. #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
.@cyclingkev highlights Finland’s testing strategy versus England’s. We test our children much too much. 1/3 of parents getting letter saying their primary child hasn’t met ‘the standard’. This can often be because they’re not old enough yet #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
We know key stage 1 and 2 SATS are doing damage to our children. Strong arguments for any we need investment in a National Education Service. We shouldn’t be treating children like commodities. There’s a lot to do but there’s lots that we can do! #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
‘Things need to change’ Michelle Joseph speaks about her own experiences of accessing mental health services. Contrasts her first admission with her more recent in 2017. She felt fearful and unsafe in a mixed sex ward #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
The nurses were so overstretched. On one night there were only agency staff...the patients were in the position that they had to look after each other. ‘I don’t raise this to blame but to show how broken services are and there is a MH crisis’ #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
‘There is so much stigma around mental health but I don’t care... I believe it’s important that we join together and talk... We all deserve to be cared for and supported’ Michelle Joseph #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
We’re now hearing from @JonAshworth. It’s been a busy week but good that Jon’s here to talk about what @UKLabour will do in government. #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
.@JonAshworth talks about how mental and social health has been at times, over the last 71yrs, been ignored. He talks about the cuts to CAMHS, with money moved to other parts of the NHS. Credits @lovebillybragg for her campaigning on the issue #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
Whilst we hear possible action from @Conservatives on reintroducing student bursaries for a small number of nurses, @JonAshworth reminds us of @UKLabour commitment to reintroduce bursaries across the board () #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
As a health visitor, so rooted in public health, it’s great to hear @JonAshworth commitment to a health in all policies approach! #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
The last speaker at today’s #MentalHealthCrisisSummit is @drmarielouise. ‘It’s beholden on all NHS professionals to put their heads above the parapet and speak out about safety of services. #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
.@drmarielouise criticises the promise of parity of esteem. Highlights a number of stats including only 0.9% of the NHS budget going on child MH services. #MentalHealthCrisisSummit
And that’s today’s #MentalHealthCrisisSummit done. I’m off home with plenty of work to do on the train. Hope the tweets have been useful and I’ll be keeping @UniteinHealth members updated with next steps as I hear! Well done @nhscampaigns & @keepnhspublic 👏👏👏
