I say this with real affection for the BBC and the thousands who do amazing work there. I do not subscribe to conspiracies; I just think a bit of laziness has crept into weekend reporting

2. Objectively, the factual rump of the story is that the PM has been referred for investigation. It is NOT some anonymous unsubstantiated Trumpian response from Downing St. I see this happen far too much now: The No.10 narrative is adopted in the *framing* of the story itself.
3. Nothing that follows can fix this. No amount of reportage and nuanced discussion can dislodge the fact that the entire hour's bulletin opens with the words "A politically motivated attack". It is the equivalent of the big capital letters on a front page. It colours everything.
4. Now, I know, this is subtle and there are ways to defend it. The BBC's biggest organisational flaw is a reflexive defensiveness to criticism. But I also know, many of the BBC journos reading this, will know in their bones I am right. This is inappropriate editorialising. [End]
