"You know what it's like with the EU", says @DamianCollins to @adamboultonSKY, "they always say no, until they say yes."

Only problem with betting the UK's future on this is, it's just not true. Often the EU say no, until they say "what's wrong with you, we said no". See TTIP.

I don't know where this fits in Liz Truss's long and distinguish catalogue of idiocy, but pretty near the top. As Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade, apparently, she doesn't need to know what Boris is offering to the EU.
That's because Liz is "focussed on international trade". Which trade with the EU, of course, WILL BE post-exit. And what does she reply to the first question any third country asks her: "What will your relationship be with the EU?" Presumably, "I don't know. Above my pay grade."
I just find the idea that Liz Truss is the smartest, shrewdest, best negotiator that we have as a country, as profoundly depressing as it is thoroughly offensive. Both to the UK population and to the leaders she meets. You could pick someone randomly off the street and do better.

Powell spot on: This “deal” is designed to be rejected. Instead of presenting it to the EU to be discussed, the PM leaked it to the press, put it in his conference speech as and sent it to individual EU27 gov’ts. All this is entirely designed for his domestic audience.
Johnson’s take-it-or-leave-it offer totally contravenes what UK signed up to in 2017. Both in terms of content (the promise was “no regulatory barriers” - not barriers five miles away) AND in terms of process (UK agreed to negotiate with appointed team - now trying to bypass it).
Important to remember the backstop is not an end in itself. It’s a mechanism for achieving a solution which complies with UK obligations under GFA, to preserve an all-island-economy and facilitate both Irish and British identities. Johnson’s deal patently does NOT achieve this.

I say this with real affection for the BBC and the thousands who do amazing work there. I do not subscribe to conspiracies; I just think a bit of laziness has crept into weekend reporting

BUT

This is how the top story is being reported today. It is a big, big problem. [thread]
2. Objectively, the factual rump of the story is that the PM has been referred for investigation. It is NOT some anonymous unsubstantiated Trumpian response from Downing St. I see this happen far too much now: The No.10 narrative is adopted in the *framing* of the story itself.
3. Nothing that follows can fix this. No amount of reportage and nuanced discussion can dislodge the fact that the entire hour's bulletin opens with the words "A politically motivated attack". It is the equivalent of the big capital letters on a front page. It colours everything.

2 - In 2018, we imported more than 175,000 finished vehicles from Turkey, mainly cars and vans. In 2008, we were importing just over 65,000. Turkey ranked 5^ among the biggest export markets for UK cars.
3 - High level of integration was fuelled by favourable trading conditions of the EU-Turkey customs union. This agreement allows all industrial goods to be traded tariff-free, regardless of their origin, once in free circulation in the EU-Turkey customs area.

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/
"This could be mitigated by changes to the backstop itself," she wrote to @eucopresident & @JunckerEU "Proposals for a way in which the UK could choose to exit the backstop unilaterally were it ever to come into force, or for a hard time limit... 2/
on the duration of the usage of the backstop, have been raised and discussed in Parliament. We have also raised them previously in negotiations." So there are her proposals, i.e. the EU should basically just cave on backstop in face of House of Commons defeat. But but but ... 3/

How @DailyMailUK twisted the results of @Survation poll and created a nice little frontpage to support Theresa May with some beautiful YESes in red and some lovely supporting words, even though the front page does not actually reflects the results of the poll...

Getting Member States involved in #Brexit negotiations will not help the #UK. It will most likely fuel domestic politicization of Brexit in #EU27 countries. This will be detrimental to UK interests.
UK #Brexit strategists and commentators as diverse as @Jeremy_Hunt, @CER_Grant , @anandMenon1 and @fromTGA warn about the dangers of No Deal for British public opinion and call on #EU27 member states to get involved.

The British people will hate the EU for a generation, they warn.

The idea/hope is that MS governments will be more willing to give in to British demands. I think this is a flawed argument that overlooks the dynamics of politicization.
